mixsoon Bean Essence 30ml — the Korean fermented soybean essence, starter size
Same formula as the full size, smaller bottle. Bean Essence is the product mixsoon was built on — a fermented soybean essence with a seven-ingredient list, and the reason a small, ingredient-obsessed Korean brand ended up on shelves outside Korea.
The 30ml exists for one good reason: find out whether your skin likes it before you commit. That fits the brand's whole argument — introduce one thing, see what happens, learn something. Buying the small bottle first is that idea applied to your wallet.
Seven ingredients — the whole formula
Water, propanediol, glycerin, fermented soybean extract, fermented pomegranate extract, fermented barley filtrate, fermented pear filtrate.
No fragrance, no alcohol, no colourant, pH 5–6. Four of the seven are ferments, and the fermentation is the point: it breaks large molecules into smaller ones the skin can take up — the same principle behind doenjang and every other fermented food Korea has made for centuries.
What each ferment does
Fermented soybean — the hero, and the reason for the slippery honey-water texture.
Fermented pomegranate — a natural source of AHA, the gentle exfoliating side, without a scrub particle.
Fermented barley — beta-glucan, holds water at the surface.
Fermented pear — the antioxidant end.
Why a short ingredient list is worth paying for
A short formula is diagnostic. If a twelve-active serum irritates you, you have learned nothing — you cannot tell which of the twelve did it. If seven ingredients do, you have narrowed it to seven, and you keep that knowledge for every product you buy afterwards.
Which is exactly why the 30ml makes sense as a first mixsoon purchase, and why the line suits reactive skin. See sensitive skin.
30ml or 50ml?
30ml — this one. Your first mixsoon product, or reactive skin you want to test properly before scaling up.
50ml — once you know. Take the larger bottle if you plan to use the PM massage method, which gets through noticeably more product than tapping it in.
The mixsoon massage method
Most people tap it in after toner, morning and night. mixsoon also recommends a PM massage: a few pumps, massage, then wipe with a warm towel or a toner pad. Grains appear as you work.
Which mixsoon Bean product should you buy?
If you buy two things, buy the essence and a cream — that is a complete routine.
Bean Essence 30ml — this one. The starter size.
Bean Cream — the lid.
Bean Toner — the first hydrating layer, 300ml.
Bean Toner Pad — toner plus light exfoliation.
Bean Cleansing Oil — for taking sunscreen off.
Where it sits
Cleanse, tone, this, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen. An essence preps everything after it — and it still needs sealing, or most of it evaporates off.
Shop more in Korean serums, dry and dehydrated skin, hydration, damaged skin barrier, or mixsoon. Read dehydrated skin vs dry skin — skin that is oily and tight at once is dehydrated, not oily.
Frequently asked questions
Is the 30ml the same formula as the 50ml?
Identical. Same seven ingredients, smaller bottle.
How long does 30ml last?
Tapping it in twice a day, roughly two months. Considerably less if you use the massage method — which is what the 50ml is for.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s actually in Bean Essence?
Seven ingredients: water, propanediol, glycerin, fermented soybean extract, fermented pomegranate extract, fermented barley filtrate and fermented pear filtrate. No fragrance, no alcohol, no colourant, pH 5–6. That short list is the product, not a marketing angle around it.
What does the fermentation actually do?
It breaks large molecules into smaller ones your skin can take up. It is the same principle as doenjang or any other fermented food — the nutrients are there either way, but fermentation makes them available. Four of the seven ingredients here are ferments.
Is it an exfoliant or a hydrator?
Both, mildly. The fermented pomegranate is a natural source of AHA, which is the gentle exfoliating side; the barley and glycerin do the hydrating. There are no scrub particles in it at all — the exfoliation is chemical and it is mild.
What are the grains that appear when I massage it in?
You will read that they are your own sebum and dead skin lifting out. We would be cautious about that — nobody has shown it convincingly, and ordinary product pilling looks much the same. What is not in doubt is that the AHA is real and skin feels smoother after. The claim isn't needed for the product to work.
Bean Essence or Mung Bean Seed Essence — what’s the difference?
Different products. Bean Essence is fermented soybean; Mung Bean Seed Essence is mung bean. Reviews and reseller listings confuse the two constantly, describing one while listing the other's ingredients. If you're comparing write-ups, check which bottle is in the photo.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
It is a reasonable place to start — seven ingredients, no fragrance, no alcohol, and a pH close to skin's own. That said, 'short list' means fewer things to react to, not zero risk. Patch test first, as with anything new.
Where does it go in my routine?
After toner, before serum and moisturiser. An essence is a thin hydrating layer that preps what follows, and it still needs sealing — without a moisturiser on top, most of it evaporates within a few hours.
