What cooling skincare actually does

Worth being honest here, because most of the category isn't. The cooling sensation itself is about comfort rather than treatment — dermatologists are consistent on this point. Light, water-based textures for hot weather. Sebum production tends to rise with skin temperature, which is why skin turns oilier in summer — and why a lighter moisturizer often works better than cutting moisturizer altogether.

What to chill and what to leave out

Water-based products chill well: toners, gels, sheet masks, mists and pads. Oils and rich creams change texture in the cold, so leave those at room temperature. A small skincare fridge isn't necessary — a shelf in the door works.

After sun, after workouts, after a hot day

Reach for a chilled toner or hydrogel mask, then a light gel moisturizer. Skip retinol and acids that evening. If skin is genuinely burned rather than just hot, that's a medical matter and not something a mask addresses.
